What is PowerPivot?
PowerPivot is a Microsoft technology for storing data cubes.

PowerPivot for Excel is an application of Vertipaq technology, which is a form of SQL Server Analysis Services.  PowerPivot for Excel is a free add-in for Excel 2010, and does not require SQL Server Analysis Services or any server.

Data mining is the automated or semi-automated process of discovering patterns in data. Microsoft has enabled data mining for Excel version 2007 and higher by producing a free add-in for this purpose.  Though the add-in is free, data mining requires SQL Server Analysis Services.

This website discusses data mining in general and SQL Server Data Mining in particular.  On this website, you can find resources for data mining, including a blog.

Please use the menu system to access the resources on the website.  In particular, the Getting Started page provides configuration options on how to connect Microsoft Excel (2007 and higher) with SQL Server Analysis Services.
